AHOPE FOR CHILDREN NEWSLETTER

WINTER 2006

Dear Friends of AHOPE;

       We are now approaching the season of gratitude and joyous celebration, reflection on the past year, and plans for the next year. At AHOPE, we are grateful that we have not lost a single child to AIDS in 2006, thanks in great part to the medical care/medications provided by our partner charity, World Wide Orphans.  We are grateful that barriers to adoption of HIV+ Ethiopian orphans have been lowered, thanks to the dedication of some very determined adoption pioneers, and that by the time you read this, at least 5 of our children will be home with at least that many more well along in the adoption process. Equally wonderful is that the number of potential parents enquiring about HIV adoption is growing steadily.  We are grateful for the hard-working volunteers, who have enriched the lives of the children in so many ways.  We are especially grateful for Director Sidisse Buli, the distinguished and wise Board of Directors of AHOPE Ethiopia, and the AHOPE Ethiopia staff, for their dedication to, and genuine love for the children in their care.  The children now are waiting with joyous anticipation for Christmas and their community birthday party in January (when every child officially becomes one year older), both very festive events with decorations, new clothes, special food, gifts, singing and games. Looking further into the future, the adults are happily planning educations for these children, who now have a very good chance of growing up!

AHOPE Children

     We have big plans for 2007. Grant applications have been made to develop a community outreach program that will help extended families care for the HIV+ orphan at home by providing social services, financial assistance, medical help and oversight, transportation and school fees as needed.  There will be an expanded community education program to counter prevailing ignorance, superstition and fear surrounding AIDS.  A program manager, education supervisor and outreach workers are being hired, and the initial program is designed to help 100 orphans in their homes.  The number of orphans in Ethiopia continues to grow.  We must expand our vision beyond institutional care.

     Next year we also plan to launch a capital campaign to purchase/remodel or build from scratch a new facility to house all the children, offices for the staff of the children’s home and the community outreach project, and a community library where our children can mingle socially with local children and their families. We are developing materials to use for this campaign and you will all be hearing a lot more about this project in subsequent newsletters.

     Thank you for your support and prayers throughout the year.  You have made good things happen for our children.
